In this 5-week course, World Film at ACE will explore how the choices made by ordinary individuals can lead to circumstances of moral ambiguity, deception, and the unintended consequences. Five films will be featured as part of this series:
- A Simple Plan – In this brilliant film by Sam Raimi explores themes of greed and morality, and how chance, combined with extraordinary circumstances, can lead to the ordinary individual to ethical collapse.
- Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead – Directed by Sidney Lumet, and starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Albert Finney, and Marisa Tomei, this film portrays the family unit as both refuge and battlefield in a masterful crime thriller.
- In Bruges – Martin McDonagh sets this compelling dark comedy in the historic medieval town of Bruges, where after a botched “job,” two hit men are sent ostensibly to hide out – only to discover darker motives behind their presence there, and to experience life-changing events involving guilt and redemption.
- A History of Violence – In this David Cronenberg film, a seemingly ordinary, mild-mannered man, portrayed by Viggo Mortensen, finds his life untended when the publicity occasioned by his defense of innocent victims forces him to resurrect aspects of his past that he was struggled hard to bury.
- Emily the Criminal – John Patton Ford’s riveting drama pits his protagonist against a world that has erected seemingly insurmountable barriers to her success and forces us to reflect on the moral ambiguities of the choices she makes in confronting those barriers.
In addition, the film Anatomy of a Fall will be screened in serialized segments during the course.
