Peter Weir, one of cinema’s most gifted directors, blends poetic imagery with psychological depth and cultural resonance. From haunting mysteries to sweeping epics, his films reveal both the fragility and strength of human experience. World Film at ACE will screen five of his masterpieces in full:
- Picnic at Hanging Rock – When several school girls and their teacher disappear during an outing at Haming Rock, the reverberations have a dramatic impact on the community. Emblematic of Australian New Wave cinema, this has been voted the best Australian film of all time by National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.
- The Year of Living Dangerously – Weir co-wrote and as well as directed this film about a love affair, set in Jakarta during the weeks leading up to the attempted coup against President Sukarno in 1965. Linda Hunt won every major Best Supporting Actress Award (including the Academy Award) for her stunning portrayal of Billy Kwan. The film is considered one of the last in the Australian New Wave genre.
- Dead Poets Society – Robin Williams gives a stunning performance as an eccentric English teacher in an elite American prep school who inspires his students, through poetry, to “seize the day” and life to its fullest. The film received numerous accolades, including Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Director, as well as a Best Actor nomination for Williams.
- The Truman Show – This 1998 biting, satirical critique of the power of the media presaged and skewered “reality television” as entertainment. Jim Carrey gives a standout performance as Truman Burbank, an ordinary man unaware that his entire life is being filmed and broadcast and that he is an international star.
- Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World – Set during the Napoleonic Wars and is based on iconic characters created by Patrick O’Brien in 20 novels, Weir’s 2003 film won 10 Academy Award nominations, including for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Cinematography. Much of the filming took place on replica ship, in the open sea, and on the Galápagos Islands.
In addition, the film The Last Wave, a mystery drama film directed (and co-written) by Peter Weir, wil be shown in serialized segments during the course.
