Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union is the largest military operation in history. World Film at ACE presents the following film masterpieces that illuminate this harrowing event:
- Stalingrad: From the producer of Das Boot, Joseph Vilsmaier’s harrowing portrayal of the brutal Eastern Front captures the psychological and physical toll of warfare and plunges viewers into the frozen hell of the Battle of Stalingrad.
- Come and See: Hailed as “a hallucination grounded in appalling reality... full of visionary excess” by J. Hoberman of The Village Voice, the film immerses the viewer in the trauma of a Belarusian boy’s descent into the horror of Nazi occupation. Widely considered one of the most powerful anti-war films ever made.
- Enemy at the Gates: Directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, this gripping sniper duel between a Soviet marksman and a Nazi officer unfolds amid the ruins of Stalingrad, with sweeping visuals and emotional depth.
- Generation War: This German miniseries follows five friends through the chaos of war, and explores love, loss, and complicity amid the tragedy of war. Described by The New York Times as “absorbing, exciting, and possessing the sweep and vigor of Gone With the Wind,” it offers a rare personal perspective from inside the Third Reich.
In addition, selected scenes from Sam Peckinpah’s Cross of Iron will be shown.
